Our Last Day in Primary 1

On Thursday, we enjoyed a fun filled day as our last day in Primary 1 before we celebrated with a party on Friday. We played lots of games outdoors and played with our favourite toys in the P1 classroom.

We had the best day celebrating with all our friends on Friday!

I would like to say a massive thank you for all your kind words and gifts, I was overwhelmed by all your generosity. I wish all the boys and girls the best of luck in primary 2, I know they will shine bright like the little stars they are! I have loved every minute of having each of them in my class and I will miss them greatly!

Miss Trimble

Obstacle Course Competition

Today we enjoyed taking part in an obstacle course competition as part of our PE lesson...especially because the sun was shining the whole time!

We had to listen to the instructions really carefully to understand how to complete the course correctly. We were in two teams and the team who completed the obstacle course that fastest, were the winning team. 

Money £

In primary 1, we have been beginning to learn all about money. We have worked on identified the different coins, right up to a £2 coin. We played lots on interactive games to help us recognise coins and have also started to look at the value of coins. We each had coins ranging from 1p to £1 which we ordered individually from lowest to highest value. We now know that we would much rather have £1 than 1p for spending on sweets!

Fun Day

Today we took part in the Whole School Fun Day and we all had the best day! The day began with the sports day prize giving for Sports Day. We loved cheering on the boys and girls in our class who own and also got to see other family members in different classes receive medals also. 

We then took part in lots of very fun activities including musical chairs, beach ball pass, hula hoop pass, human letters and the cup of water race! What a fantastic way to spend our Fabulous Friday :) 

Our First School Sports Day

Today we took part in our first ever School Sports Day and what a fantastic day we had! The sun shone on us the whole time and the boys and girls all did a brilliant job at taking part in all the races and being good sports.

Daily Mile

Today we took part in a whole school Daily Mile as part of Northern Irelands Does the Daily Mile. We joined schools all over Northern Ireland to take part in a daily mile. Before doing so, we talked about why we carry out the Daily mile and the importance of this for our health and wellbeing. Primary 1 led the way for our whole school Daily Mile and what a fantastic job all the boys and girls did!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Today, we used egg cartons to paint out very own Hungry Caterpillars. We previously listened to 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' story and discussed how the caterpillar changed into a a big beautiful butterfly. In WAU, we will be exploring this further as we look at the life cycle of a butterfly. Our Hungry Caterpillars turned out so well and we can't wait to get them up on our display board!

Exploring Direction with Bee-Bots 

Today in Numeracy we had lots of fun using our Bee bot to learn all about direction. We used our mini-beast world mat to help direct out bee bot to specific places. We gave been learning all about moving in different directions such as forward, backward and sideward. Today we even looked at left and right. We took it in turns to get the bee bot to where we wanted to land before working in pairs. The boys and girls took turns at giving each other a destination to direct the bee bot to. We are learning lots of new vocabulary related to direction and movement and we can’t wait to continue using our bee bot during play based activities.

Our May Alter 

This week, the children have been learning that May is a special month during which we can honour Mary. We have been practicing our prayer 'Hail Mary' and will continue to learn all about Mary this month. In honour of Mary, we have set up a May Alter which some of the children kindly brought flowers in for, to decorate.

Micro-Habitats

In WAU, we have been learning all about mini-beast’s micro-habitats. We already knew where lots of mini-beasts live as we discovered this on our mini-beast hunt but we have been using ICT to help us find out more information, which will also help us with our report writing on ladybirds and spiders. We labelled mini-beasts using a word mat to help us before matching the mini-beast to it’s micro-habitat!

Our Mini-Beast Hunt 

Today we went on a mini-beast hunt around our school and had the most fun! Before we went outside we had a look at our tick list of the mini-beasts we wanted to find. We worked in pairs and took turns with our special mini-beast catchers and magnifying pots to put them in. We found lots of different mini-beasts which we then brought inside to investigate. We could see the mini-beasts really closely with our magnifying pots and glasses. We then released them into our bug hotel. All the information we have gathered will help us write a report on a chosen mini-beast as well as completing some data handling work in numeracy as we have counted how many of each mini-beast we have found.

Subtraction, Subtraction, Subtraction

This week, we have started learning all about subtraction. We have been familiarising ourselves with the subtractions sign and all the language that is associated with subtraction such as minus and take away. We have been using cubes to help us follow subtraction sentences and carrying out the sum. We have learned that unlike addition sums, the answer is always a smaller number. We have played lots of games on the IWB to help us understand subtraction.

Our Bug Hotel

Today we continued our work on mini-beasts and made a bug hotel for the all the mini-beasts that live in our school environment. We discussed the habitats that mini-beats live in and decided on the best material to collect and place into our bug hotel. We are so excited to keep an eye on our bug hotel to see how many different mini-beats we can attract.

Fun in the Sun

We have been enjoying the sunshine this week in primary 1 by getting outdoors and planting sunflower seeds for our outdoor area. We know that some mini-beasts enjoying flying or crawling into nice bright flowers.

We previously made sunflowers for Mothers Day so we recapped the instructions to help us remember each step correctly. We have put them in a nice, sunny corner of our garden and we can't wait to look after them and watch them grow.

The weather was so lovely, we even ate out snack outdoors!

Learning Through Play

Today we enjoyed learning through play outdoors, in the great weather. We played games with our parachute which extended our knowledge of colour and number, as well as our listening skills and to help us follow instructions. The boys and girls were given a colour to start, they had to listen to the colour being shouted out, before passing under the parachute to find that colour on the opposite side. The children also had to pass the ball to different colours of the parachute without touching the ball. We counted how long it took to get the ball to the correct colour. We had lots of fun and hope for more sunny weather to come!

Finding Ways To Make 10

In numeracy today, we were looking at all the ways to make 10. We recapped on our number bonds to 5 as well as our doubles to 10. We were each given 10 counters and as a class, carried out one way of making 10. We then played our fact families game to help us remember that the same numbers can be used in two sums. All the boys and girls had their own lady birds to help them make two sets of numbers by adding counters to each side. From this, we recorded our own sums for all the different ways of making 10

Making Bird Feeders 

Our primary one class have been in full swing with learning all about our topic, Spring and Easter. After going on our spring walk to find lots of signs of Spring in our school environment, we only found two birds in our garden. We found lots of birds nests around the front of our school but thought we would like to see more birds around the back of our school.

We discussed how to attract some more birds to our school and decided on making some bird feeders to do this. We all made two bird feeders each before deciding on a place in our garden to hang these. We had so much fun doing this and we hope to see lots more birds in our garden. We will find out when we come back from our Easter holidays if many birds have visited, as the bird feeders will have less food on them. 

Posting Our Letters to Santa

Today, we posted our Santa Letters. We each wrote Santa Claus’ name on the front of our envelopes and made sure that our letters were going to The North Pole in Lapland, by matching the address on our envelope, to the address written on the interactive whiteboard. We then followed instructions to fold our letters correctly before putting them into the envelope. The boys and girls were very good at walking down to the post box and keeping safe by staying on the footpath. Each of the children, posted their own letter to Santa! We hope it arrives on time!

Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas Nativity

As you all know, we had been working tremendously hard over the last few weeks to learn our lines for our Primary 1 Nativity. The time is nearly here for all our friends and families to get to watch it at our drive in cinema and we are so excited for you all to finally get to see the great work the boys and girls have put in! For now, here is a little sneak peak of the boys and girls in their costumes.

‘Imoves’ Physical Activities

Our boys and girls have been taking part in some physical activity as part of learning all about how to stay healthy and happy! We are learning that this helps keep us fit and healthy and have been using the ‘imoves’ program to follow activities such as pumped up Pilates. The boys and girls love it and we hope to carry out one of the sessions, each day in school in the run up to Christmas!

Measuring Penguins

We have been continuing our work on measure and have been using a non-standard unit of measure. To do this, we used cubes to measure the height of penguins. We needed to cover the whole penguin from head to toe so that we knew we were measuring the penguin correctly.  We discussed how the tallest penguin had the most cubes and that the smallest penguin had the least cubes.

Making Jam Sandwiches

For our work today on procedural writing, we made jam sandwiches. We began by looking at the instructions to help us make jam sandwiches and gather all the ingredients and resources. We then worked with a partner to take turns at following each step of the ingredients which were displayed on the interactive whiteboard. we got to use the knifes ourselves and enjoyed trying to butter the bread and spread jam. Afterwards, we recalled the steps before sequencing these in our books.

Christmas Activities

As we are now in the month of December, we have started our Christmas crafts! We have had lots of fun browsing through toy catalogues and putting together a Christmas list for Santa. We signed these off with our names and closer to Christmas. We will walk to the local post box to send these off to Santa.  We also started to make some beautiful Christmas cards which we have been putting lots of work into. We can’t wait for our families to see them!

Blending Words

Today we carried out lots of work on blending all our new sounds learned to date. We played games on the interactive whiteboard where we had to sound out and blend the words before deciding if it was a real or nonsense word. We then had a go at writing three words on our whiteboard that Miss Trimble called out. The boys and girls worked really hard to listen to each sound in the words, focusing on the first, middle and end sound. worked with a partner to match the words to their pictures. We then worked with a partner to match words to a picture! Lots of practice at home will really help us learn how to segment and blend more easily!

Hot Chocolate for Santa

This week in our classroom, we had a little visit from some of Santa’s Elves. The Elves left us a letter as well as instructions and all the ingredients to make Santa a hot chocolate. The letter told us that Santa likes his hot chocolate a certain way and gave us the exact recipe. The elves said that it is so important to follow each step of the instructions correctly, so we used the numbers on the instructions to help us decide what came next. We knew to start by looking at the title and then staying at the top of the page and looking for number 1. We also know how important it is to first of all gather the equipment and ingredients we needed to make the hot chocolate. The elves told us we might need to keep practising at home so that went Santa visits our homes on Christmas eve, the hot chocolate is just right!!

Anti-Bullying Week

We celebrated anti-bullying week by starting off the week by wearing odd socks. We discussed what 'bullying' meant and watched an interactive video before playing a game, where we had to choose between kind and not kind pictures. We continued to talk about the theme ‘United Against Bullying’ throughout the week. In our class, we talked about how we can make a stand against bullying by always being kind to others. To show we make a stand against bullying, we each designed our own wristband to show that we all support anti-bullying week. As well as this, we drew pictures of how we show kindness to others and shared with the rest of the class, what we had drawn

Odd Socks Day

Today we had an 'odd socks day' to start off Anti-bullying week. In our class, we talked about what bullying meant and discussed how we can show and share kindness. We will be carrying out some more activities this week on anti-bullying week throughout the week.

'Simon Says'

Today we played ‘Simon Says’ to help us follow instructions. We had to listen out for the different actions we were being asked to do but also follow the instructions of Simon says. We only completed the action if ‘Simon Says’. This was lots of fun and all the boys and girls were great sports playing this game. We are working on following instructions also when rehearsing our Christmas Play.

3D Shape Sorting

Today we received a letter which told us we had a very special job to carry out. The local council heard we are learning about people who help us, but they needed us to help their binmen/women. The letter explained that the bin men forgot to pick up our school’s rubbish and now it has blown all over our school. They received a call from a ‘not so happy’ Mrs Sloan, so they needed our help to find it collect it and sort it for recycling purposes. They asked us to sort the shapes into different 3D shapes for them. We got into partners to collect the rubbish before having a go at sorting it correctly. We did a great job and the local ‘Mr Binner’ from the local council has been in touch to say we did I great job!

People Who Help Us

In World Around Us this week we talked about the people who help us in our community, in our school and at home. We then chose a person who helps us and made a figure of them in our art lesson. The boys and girls had to choose and glue the body parts correctly, so that the person had all body parts in the correct place. Our boys and girls on primary 1 are very artistic!

Measure - Length

Today, we started our work on length. We discussed what we know about ‘length’ and lots of great feedback was given. We talked about how we can measure things by comparing the size. We measured some boys and girls in our class and talked about height. We then lay on the floor and discussed the length of the boys and girls in our class. We measured and sorted socks from shortest to tallest, before playing some interactive games on shorter and longer.

Using Numicon to Make Subsets

This week in numeracy, we were learning how to partition sets into subsets, using numcion shapes. We each had to find the number 5 numcion shape and find other numcion shapes that we could use to make number 5. We discussed how the numbers to make subsets to five, needed to be smaller numbers. We all had very different ways of making 5. We then recorded some of the these ways on the IWB.

Wooly Hat Day

Today was Wooly Hat Day! We all wore our wooly hats to help raise funds for Mourne Stimulus. Have a look at all our beautiful hats.

Phonics

This week, we started our work on Phonics. Throughout the week, we focused on the letters ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’. We were learning how to recognise, read and write the new sounds and letters. At the end of the week, we talked about how we blend these sounds to make a word. We played lots of interactive games to help us remember the sounds. The boys and girls have all received set 1 of High Frequency Words which I would ask you to be encouraging your child to read, without sounding out the word. We will be looking at these in class also.

Numicon Staircases

Today in numeracy, we made numicon staircases. As a class, we discussed how a staircase gets taller as we start from the bottom and go up. We decided that the smallest numicon shape should go first and discussed what number the smallest numicon shape was (one).  We then completed a numicon staircase as class, deciding very carefully which numicon shape came next. The boys and girls then each completed their own numicon staircase. When this was compete, we partnered up with one peer and took turns at taking away a numicon shape, while our partner closed their eyes and had to guess which numicon shape (number) was missing. We looked at the number before and after to figure out the missing number. We had lots of fun doing this and we can't wait to carry out some more work with our numicon shapes next week!

People Who Help Us 

For this term, our new topic is ‘People Who Help Us’. We began this topic by discussing what we already know and what we would like to find out in this topic. Lots of great discussions took place about the people who help us in different aspects of our lives such as at home, in the community and ant school.

Our play area has been set up as a post office and the boys and girls are having so much fun taking on the roles of the different people associated with post offices. We can’t wait to learn more about people who help us and we look forward to setting up more play areas in our room which are associated with people who help us. Fiction V Non - Fiction

Today in Literacy, we started to learn all about fiction and non-fiction books. We are focusing on this, ahead of our new writing form ‘procedural writing’. We listened to a song which helped us remember that fiction is ‘make believe’ and non-fiction is ‘real’ giving us factual information. We had a big job of helping to sort out our library by putting books into fiction and non-fiction section. To do this, we each got a fiction and non-fiction book. All the boys and girls spent some time looking through their books to help them decide which part of the library it belonged to. Each of the boys and girls then took turns at placing their book into the fiction or non-fiction pile.

All About Number 6

This week in numeracy, we have learning all about the number 6. We carried out our usual carousal of activities to help us read and write number 6 as well as learning how to make sets of 6. We have had lots of practice writing the number 6 on our whiteboards too.

 The song that goes with number goes like this:

Thursday's Maths Challenge

Today we competed another maths week challenge. For today’s challenge we had to go on a number hunt to find all the hidden number hands. The numbers were all hidden very well in our outdoor area but we all were very good at hunting for them and found all the numbers from 1 – 10. When we found all our numbers we had to put them in the correct order and find natural resources outside to match the number that we found!

All About Number 5

This week we have been learning all about the number 5. We have been carrying out all our fun, practical activities to help us read and write the number five, as well as making sets for number 5. Our new song for number five goes like this:

Down and round,

Then a flag on high

That’s the way we make a five

Maths Week - Day 2

For our second day of maths week, we learnt how to play 'Snakes and Ladders'. This game allows us to develop our understanding of counting, position and direction. We played this in our pairs and were very good at taking turns.

Autumn Nature Hunt

Today we went on an Autumn Nature Hunt around our school which was lots of fun! Before we went on our hunt we discussed the signs of Autumn and played a quiz where we had to guess what the autumn picture was. We had a tick list of the things we wanted to find on our Autumn Hunt which we then completed when we got back to the class. These included different coloured leaves, acorns, conkers, sycamore seeds and pinecones. We found all of these things apart from conkers on our school grounds. We added all the autumn things we found around our school to our new Autumn Sensory table. Tomorrow we will do a recount of our Autumn and also make some leaf hedgehogs during art.

Maths Week – Day 1

Today marks the first day of ‘Maths Week’ and we had lots of fun carrying out some maths challenges. To start off the week, we played some hopscotch in the classroom which helps up with number recognition. We then completed the task ‘Five Little Ducks’ which focused on number recognition, counting, comparing and ordering. We each had to order the ducks from 1 -5 before counting out cubes to match the numbers. We then talked about how the cubes started small and got bigger. We then re-ordered the cubes from biggest to smallest and discussed how the numbers went back on the number line when we did this. We can’t wait to go on the number hunt tomorrow around the school!

All About Me Art

We have been continuing to carry out activities on ‘All About Me’. In Art this week, we made a full body portrait of ourselves, using lots of different materials. Miss Trimble said we are a very artistic and creative class! We each got to choose the material we wanted to use for our clothes, eyes and hair before drawing our mouth and nose. We then traced over our names to put beside our portraits. These were added to our friendship wall display and we are very delighted with out it turned out!

Our Senses

In WAU this week, we started to look at our senses. We  are all able to identify the five senses and name the body parts we use for each sense. We focused on the sense of touch today. We know that we use our hands to touch and feel things We each had a turn at closing our eyes and putting our hands into the feely. We had to give our class clues about what we could feel in the feely bag and together, we took a guess. we used lots of great describing words which helped up guess more accurately. We can't wait to use our sense of taste for our taster session next week!

Alliteration

This week in Literacy, we have been focusing on alliteration, to develop our phonological awareness. We listened to the story ‘Don’t Hog the Hedge’ and discussed the alliteration in the character’s names. Miss Trimble then played the ‘I spy’ game where we had to guess the name of the person she had spied, by listening to the initial sound of their name. As a class, we came up with alliteration for all the boys and girls name. We then coloured this in and Miss Trimble and Sharon displayed these in our classroom. Have a look at our alliteration names!

Making Sets

In our numeracy lesson this week, we were learning how to make sets of numbers. We each had our own dice to roll which we used to count the dots. We then found the number that represented this number of dots. We have been learning all about ordering numbers correctly so we decided where the numbers went in the number line before counting out the correct number of counters under each number from 1-6. The boys and girls concentrated really hard when carrying out this task and had lots of fun doing so. We also recapped on numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3 and had a go at writing these on our whiteboards. Miss Trimble keeps telling us 'Practice Makes Perfect!'

Syllable Fun

We have been developing our self-management skills throughout our Literacy lessons this week. We have been learning all about syllables and in this lesson we had to focus on the activity of counting out the syllables in a word by clapping and setting out counters to represent this. We persisted with the task at hand and maintained attention throughout. We then reviewed our learning as we went over each word and counted out the syllables. This allowed us to self-correct and improve our learning. When we needed help, we knew to put our hands up to seek support. We loved our new syllable song where we clapped put, stomped out and chomped out the sounds and syllables within the words.

All About Number 3

This week we were learning all about the number 3. We each picked up three objects from our class to show we understand three in a set. We then used our magic fingers to make the number 3 formation in the air, before practicing it on our whiteboards. We took turns at different stations with number three activities. This week we especially enjoyed playing number 3 games on the IWB. We also learnt a new song that helps us to remember how to write number 3. It goes like this:

That’s the way we make a 3.

Number Recognition

Today in numeracy we carried out lots of work on number recognition and extended our understanding of numicon shapes. We recapped on counting forwards and backwards, re-ordering numbers as well as identifying numbers before and after. We then took turns at rolling our big dice which has numbers and identified which number it landed on before choosing the numicon shape which matched the number shown. After this, we talked about the different colours of the numicon shapes and completed the matching activity.

Sorting 2D Shapes By Colour

We have been busy learning all about 2D shapes again this week. We recapped on the common 2D shapes that we have learning about and talked about the properties of each. We then sorted the 2D shapes into sets, according to their properties. After we completed the sorting activity, we independently completed the pizza shape sorting activity in our numeracy books. Each of the boys and girls decided on what colours they would choose to colour and sort each shape on the pizza. They completed the key to help them remember the colours of each shape.

Visualisation

We have been continuing our work on 'The Three Little Pigs' story throughout the week. We have been working very hard to sequence the story and have had lots of discussions around the start, middle and end of the story. As well as this we have been working on our visualisation skills. This is when we represent what we know about the story in our work. To do this, we listened to a story about where the second little pig went to live after the Big Bad Wolf blew his house down. The story told us all about the beautiful little cottage, deep in the woods and the setting around it. As a class, we discussed the describing words and tried to imagine what the house would look like. We shared our ideas on the Interactive whiteboard, before drawing the house ourselves, based on the information we had heard in the story. Have a look at our visualisation display which is full of the boys and girls fantastic work.

This week we were learning all about the number 2. We each picked up two objects from our class to show we understand two in a set. We then used our magic fingers to make the number 2 formation in the air, before practicing it on our whiteboards. We took turns at different stations with number two activities. We also learnt a new song that helps us to remember how to write number 2. It goes like this:

'The Three Little Pigs'

Today we had so much fun recounting The Three Little Pigs story. We listened to the story of The Three Little Pigs and joined in with the repetitive phrases: “Let me in, Let me in”, “Not by the hair on my chinny chin” and “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down”. We then talked about the start, middle and of the story and what happened during these parts. We later took part in retelling each part of the story by using puppets and props. We each had a part in the story to play and had great fun doing so.  

Number Fun

In numeracy this week we are doing lots of number work. Today we practised counting to ten forwards and backwards. We began to look at numbers before and after a given number as well as counting on from a given number. We talked about the order of numbers and as a class, the boys and girls ordered themselves from 0-5, with number cards. We then explored numicon shapes and had lots of fun choosing the correct shape to make a picture. The boys and girls also looked at making sets for given numbers and in their numeracy books, ordered numbers from 0-5 and made sets for these numbers.

Syllables

We have been continuing to develop our phonological awareness by learning all about syllables. We grouped the boys and girls in the class according to the number of syllables in their name. to help us do this, we clapped out the number of syllables as we said the words. We then looked at different objects and then grouped them according to their number of syllables.

Developing our ICT skills

We have begun to develop our ICT skills in the classroom. We have been using the interactive whiteboard to play games linked to our numeracy and literacy focus. We have all been taking turns at using the IWB pen. In this lesson, we had to carefully select the shape which came next in the pattern as this is our problem solving focus.

We took turns at different stations with number one activities. we also learnt a new song that helps us to remember how to write number 1. It goes like this:

‘Silly Soup’

Today we continued our work on rhymes and rhyming words. We sang a song called ‘Silly Soup and made some silly soup with different rhyming words. The children added lots of words that rhymed with a given word such as hat, can and car. The boys and girls loved singing the song that goes as follows:

Today we’re making silly soup,

We’re making soup that’s silly,

We’re going to put it in the fridge to make it nice and chilly.

(Sang to tune of ‘Pop goes the weasel)

 We then played a game where we had to match rhyming words with another person in our class to make a rainbow. We look forward to carrying out some more fun activities on rhyming.

Rhyming Fun

The boys and girls had great fun and proved to be very musical during our rhymes lesson. To begin, we went over some of our favourite nursery rhymes and as a class, decided we would use Humpty Dumpty as our nursery rhyme today. We then each chose an instrument to play along whilst we sang Humpty Dumpty. We explored how each instrument could be played. We then performed Humpty Dumpty with our instruments and discussed terms such as slow, fast, loud and quiet. We performed Humpty Dumpty in each of the different styles and videoed our performance so that we could watch back together. We hope you like it too.

Exploring Patterns

We have had lots of fun exploring simple patterns. We helped complete ‘Curly the Caterpillar’ on the interactive whiteboard so that he had his whole body together. We then got creative and made a pattern of our own in the classroom. This was a boy/girl pattern. We then extended our thinking and made a further pattern of boy, boy, girl which you can see from our photos. We then chose our own two colours of pegs and continued this pattern on peg boards. Following on from this activity we complete some repeated patterns on scarves. Lots of great thinking was carried out during our numeracy lessons to do so.

Learning Through Play

We are learning all about ourselves through our topic ‘All About Me’. We used mirrors to explore our appearance as well as talking about similarities and differences between ourselves and our peers. We discussed the colour of our eyes, hair and other features. We then drew pictures of ourselves.

We have been focusing on learning our own name this week and discussing why our name is so special to us. All the boys and girls names were displayed on the interactive whiteboard and each child was encouraged to identify their name. We discussed the ‘tall’ letters in each of our names. We then independently chose our names from the collages to complete. Have a look at our colourful, creative collage names.

2D Shape Trail

To learn all about 2D shapes, we used our shapes feely bag. Miss Trimble felt the shapes in the bag without looking at them and gave the whole class clues about the shape, by discussing the properties. The boys and girls were able to identify a circle, square, rectangle and triangle by doing this. We then had a look around our classroom to find some more of these shapes, before going outside on our shape trail. We found lots of 2D shapes around our school and had lots of fun doing so. We finished off by completing 2D shape mats, placing shapes in the correct place to make a picture of different objects.  

All About Number 0

This week we are learning all about the number 0. The boys and girls have carried out lots of different activities linked to number 0 such as practicing our number formation on whiteboards as well as painting number 0 for our number of the week display. We have also made the number 0 in the sand and manipulated playdough to make number 0 and placed marbles correctly to make number 0. We have learnt a new song that can help us remember how to correctly write our number 0:

Around and round and round we go,

when we get home,

we have zero.

Our Listening Walk

Today we went on a 'listening walk' around our school. We are learning to develop our auditory discrimination and phonological awareness by recognising and discriminating between similar and dissimilar sounds in our environment. To do this, we used our magic listening ears to help us hear sounds more clearly. Some of the sounds we heard included cars, birds, trees blowing in the wind and cows. We then drew these into our books when we got back to the classroom.

Tomorrow we will be going on a listening walk indoors to recognise the similarities and differences between indoor and outdoor sounds in our environment and we can't wait to get our listening ears back on for this!

'All About Me'

The boys and girls have begun developing their understanding of our topic ‘All About Me’, through play. Lots of interaction has taken place in the home corner, where the children have been taking on the roles of family members and carrying out different duties, such as making and serving meals as well as looking after our babies.

The children have also been exploring the small world area and have been great at taking turns when playing with the wooden house. Children have begun exploring the different rooms in the house and adding some furniture to these.

Five Little Speckled Frogs

We started off our numeracy work by learning how to count through rhymes. All the girls and boys were eager to take part and loved taking turns during role play, acting out the five speckled frogs from the nursery rhyme. We can't wait to explore new ways of learning number in our classroom.

First Week of School

Today marks the last day of our first week in primary 1. We all had a fantastic week, full of fun and learning. We explored the different areas in our classroom and made lots of new friends. Miss Trimble and Sharon are so excited to have all the boys and girls back next week!

'Hickory Dickory Dock'

Check out our mice which we made for our Hickory Dickory Dock Display! We each followed instructions to colour in the different body parts,before carefully using our scissors to cut out and stick together. We finished them off by adding a nose and tail of our own choice.
