NESSY success

Well done to Annie and Timmy who earned the NESSY certificates this week for most time worked, and most nuggets earned. They are setting a very high standard and it is great to see.

Easter Coordinates on Just 2 Easy

In ICT our P5 tested their coordinates knowledge by creating an Easter bunny animation and noting all the coordinates their animation had to travel through to get to the Easter Egg at the end!

Irish Song

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge we are learning the song linked below. Irish language, it's in our soul!

NESSY CHAMPIONS

Well done to our Nessy winners this week on their great effort collecting nuggets and working on their sounds!

Some very special arts and crafts work this week... The boys and girls worked hard creating these beautiful cards for Mother's Day!!

WORLD BOOK DAY 2024

It was amazing to see all the wonderful props that the boys and girls worked so hard preparing, linked to their current favourite story. During our Show and Tell, the children shared information about their favourite book and why they liked it. They had the opportunity to showcase their prop and answer questions from their classmates. Well done to those who contributed!!

WAU and ICT

We looked at Elizabeth Fry and her work campaigning for human rights as one of the famous people in our new topic. We also discussed what we know about famous people and some of the famous people we would like to learn more about… these included historical famous people, inventors, artists and current celebrities/sport’s personalities!!  For our ICT ‘exchange’ we tried a whole class collaboration, where everyone shared their topic planning ideas on one document… we will try this again in smaller groups. It is great to work together and learn how ICT can help us to share our ideas.

Data Handling in P4/5

On Wednesday we had great fun looking at collecting data for a range of purposes. We got to visit some of the classes to carry out some surveys which was really fun and they all loved to see us coming! We used the tally mark to collect the data which we put into frequency tables and then created our own bar graphs for. In the afternoon P5 used their data to create digital charts on the computer. We discovered how easy it is to ‘read’ our findings when it is presented in a table. P4 continued our multiplication focus and learned a really cool trick to help us with the nine times tables which was our focus for the week. There is a video showing this trick on the QR code in P4 homework diaries. P5 worked on finding all the possibilities problems- the challenge was to create 25 different 2 stripe bucket designs using only red, blue and yellow… such excellent problem solving this week!

NESSY Award Winners

Welldone to our NESSY winners this week, who worked really hard at home and in school to earn their certificates... a great effort!!

The Magic Harp... a visit from Declan Carville

We had an excellent week in P4/5 this week, we got off to such a good start with our visit from author, Declan Carville on Monday morning. We were so excited to meet him and have the opportunity to jtalk about his book ‘The Magic Harp’ and get to ask him lots of questions about what inspires him to write. Declan was so impressed with our class and the excellent questions we asked. It was such a great morning.

'No Pens Day 2024'

Our 'no pens day' event to focus on talking and listening was a great success! We loved to hear and 'see' the favourite things from the boys and girls in our class... we had everything from pets to Lego creations! It was excellent! Well done to the boys and girls who prepared what they wanted to talk about and shared their items with us so well. We also had excellent listening skills in the class and some really great questions were asked! A super fun day!!

Happy Valentine's Day

We learned about how Valentine's day came to be and had great fun getting creative with a new skills known as 'Batik'. Batik is an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth to create beautiful designs. We altered this technique to create our own designs on paper, using white wax candles to first draw our design (lots of hearts and words of love) and then we used a wash of colour over the top. Where the wax was, the paint couldn't stick and so the beautiful patterns and designs were able to be seen. They were so creative and effective!

We LOVE Pancake Tuesday!!!

We had a super time in P4/5 today making (and eating) pancakes. Mrs Sloan shared an excellent recipe and we got to choose some of our favourite toppings to enjoy!! A great fun morning break :)

Our class assembly for 'Scoil Spreagtha'

Over the past few weeks we have been working really hard to learn our Irish vocabulary and introduce new phrases into our daily routine. We also learned the poem 'Tinneas' for our class assembly... lots of our new vocabulary was included in the poem about poor wee Nelli who wasn't feeling very well!! We were really good presenting our poem to the whole school during our Monday School Assembly. You can listen along below :)

We worked so hard in preparation for our Granparent’s mass this week. P5 pupils led the liturgy so well and we absolutely loved viewing the lovely memories our boys and girls have with their grandparents in the photos that were sent in. It was very special to be able to welcome so many grandparents into our class on Friday.

Measuring in metres and Kilometres

In numeracy this week, we continued our measures focus, learning how to measure longer distances and what is meant by ‘kilometres’. We applied our learning to length word problems on Tuesday, refreshing our knowledge of the ‘RUCSAC’ method to pick out the key information we need and to decide if we are adding, taking away or carrying out more than one step. We also looked at 3D shape this week. We revised our 2D shapes using the feely bag and trying to guess the shape accotding to the clues. 2D shape knowledge is important for 3D shapes because they make up the ‘faces’ of our 3D shapes. We learned a lot about prisms this week! 😊

St. Brigid's Day

Thursday marked St. Brigid’s day and the first day of spring in the celtic calendar. We enjoyed learning all about St. Brigid and made our own St. Brigid’s crosses (with a modern twist) to be blessed and taken home. Everyone worked super hard on this… it sure was tricky!!

Irish... What's the time Mr Wolf?

In Irish this week the focus was continued  on ouor hobbies; they tested their knowledge by participating in a group quiz.. they tested their knowledge of recognising the Irish word and also understanding phrases e.g. Is mhaith liom… We also learned about the clock and telling o’clock and half past times in Irish. We really enjoyed playing ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ in Irish! We are learning a new poem in Irish to present to the school and are looking forward to our turn to ‘show off’ our Irish skills

Measures and tables

In numeracy we focused a lot on measures, specifically length. We learned how to measure using instruments with accuracy and how to draw lines of various lengths accurately. We also learned when it was appropriate to use different units and their abbreviated forms. We enjoyed measuring ourselves and comparing tallest to smallest. We also focused on multiplication. In P5 we revised all our known multiplication facts and looked at the link between multiplying and dividing (similar to how subtraction and addition are linked). We used this knowledge to help us work out division sums. P4 are continuing to learn about timestables. This week we focused on the 5 times tables, linking them to what we know about counting in 5s and looking for patterns in the answers. They are really enjoying learning times tables and had great fun testing their knowledge so far using ‘Hit the button’.

Ni Fire Safety Talk

Last week we had Mervyn from Kilkeel Fire service in to speak to us about Fire safety. It was such a fun talk and we got to try out the fireman’s gear!! The helmet was so heavy! We each got a pack to help us think carefully about fire safety in our homes. The most important message if there is a fire; ‘Get out, Stay out, Get the fire brigade out!!’.

Callan brought in some of his beautiful Artwork that he created over the break using his new art materials... fantastic!

Toy Friday!!!!

What fun we had today showing of and sharing our favourite Christmas gift with our classmates... the best Golden Time ever!!

Irish... What is your Hobbie??

We welcomed Alice back this week for our Irish, she was very impressed by all we had learned I her absence. This week, we focused on hobbies, learning how to say them in irish and say whether we liked, didn’t like or preferred particular activities. There were such a range of hobbies in our class, which is just brilliant; everything from gardening to horseriding.

We also recorded our beautiful singing in Irish of the Christmas hymn 'Silent Night' which we prepared before Christmas... have a listen below!

Silent Night in Irish

NI Water cycle talk... How can we save water?

We had an excellent talk from NI water this week as part of our ECO school approach. We learned lots about the water cycle and how we can help it function correctly… particualrly ensuring the incorrect waste doesn’t end up in our water system or in our oceans. We were very lucky to receive information leaflets, a bookmark and a lovely reusable water bottle to help us play our part! A big thank you to Miss Cunningham for organising.

Vertical subtraction... with borrowing

In Numeracy we began to look at vertical subtraction, which was building on our work before Christmas of vertical addition. We learned that the approach to setting out the sum is the same and we always start with the units (at the top). It was super easy for everyone to begin with and then we focused on what happens if the number we are taking away is too big?! We looked closely at the use of ‘borrowing’ exchanging from the next door neighbour to make the sum possible. We used practical resources such as Diene’s base ten and then moved on to doing the written approach. Everyone worked so hard and did really well! 😊 We also worked on problem solving in P5, looking at visual diagram problems, applying our shape knowledge and using pictures to help solve the missing shapes. P4 were introduced to mulitplication. We made the link with counting in groups of 2 and talked about ‘groups of’ to introduce the concept e.g. 2 groups of 3 is the same as 2x3. This helps to visualise what is meant by ‘times’. They are very excited to learn their timetables!

P5 'being the teacher' talking their classmates through how to carry out their calculation!

Summarising

In Literacy we focused on our phonics sound ‘d’. We introduced our new comprehension focus which is ‘Summarising’ and used our novel Stig of the Dump as a focus. We read two chapters of the book this week and they were very exciting and funny. We learned the ‘high 5’ approach to summarising and did some group summarising as well as some independent writing of a summary.

'Winter Wonderland'

We had a fantastic time at the School Council 'Winter Wonderland' today. There were so many things to see and do... I think the highlight was eating the buns and biscuits that were decorated and the yummy hot chocolate. Well done and thank you to our School Council for the great idea and the P7 class for hosting!!

Our beautiful Christmas Cribs

We have put a lot of work into creating our own Christmas Crib. We are using the process to inspire our procedural writing for our focus text. We started by carefully colouring and making our figurines. We had to bring in a toilet roll tube to help make them stand. We then had to bring in an old shoebox to use for the structure of the crib. We cut out the hole, created the roof and painted it before adding straw and our star.

They look amazing!!

The school elf ‘Sprout’ appeared in our class on Thursday morning… the rascal played havoc with our beautiful tessellation Christmas tree… I don’t think the boys and girls minded but Mrs Sloan wasn’t too pleased! He said he was looking forward to our play.. I’m sure he enjoyed it!!!

Irish

We had Mrs Ryan in for her final Irish session with us on Thursday- it was so much fun. We learned a Christmas song using all our Christmas vocabulary. You can check our some videos on our class page. We also revised all our phrases inclusing our age, a new way of saying our name and used our knowledge of numbers to learn how to say ‘O’clock’ times on the clock. We then played some bingo with numbers in Irish right up to 49!!! We wowed Mrs Ryan with our singing of ‘Silent Night’ which  we have been practising all week… she was very impressed! Thank you to Mrs Ryan for all her wonderful work and the treats over the last three weeks, she has been great fun. She even came along to see us in our play on Thursday night 😊

Christmas Lettering

After enjoying our adjective lettering SOOO much, P5 decided to use this approach to decorate the word 'Christmas', thinking of all the things that we associate with Christmas time. They turned out so well!! :)

Christmas Jumper Day

'Well done' to all our boys and girls who turned out in Christmassy style on Friday in support of  a very worthy charity 'NI Cancer Fund for Children'. They all looked fabulous in their Christmas jumpers and accessories!

Tessellation

In Numeracy this week, we were learning about Tessellation… this is a big word which refers to how some 2D shapes can fit together without any gaps… like tiles. Lots of regular 2D shapes tesselate! We had fun creating our class Christmas tree using tessellation… I’m sure you will agree it looks special.

We have been preparing some lovely Christmas Crafts. The boys and girls worked hard making beautiful Christmas-themed lanterns. They also completed the ‘Missio Ireland’ Christmas colouring competition… such beautiful tonal colouring!

Irish 'Snap'!

This week Mrs Ryan taught us how to deal cards and play snap in Irish... we used our knowledge of numbers to help us. We also got to play bingo with the clothing that we learned from last week. We have been working super hard!

Mrs Ryan informed us it was Fr Nicky's Birthday, so we learned to sing 'Happy Birthday' in Irish and tried to make a call to Fr. Nicky to sing to him over the phone. Unfortunately we couldn't get through, but we know Mrs Ryan will pass on our well wishes to Fr. Nicky when she is next speaking with him.

A great day... Thank you Mrs Ryan!

Irish

This week we welcomed Mrs Ryan into our class for Irish. We had lots of fun playing 'Bingo' with our new knowledge about clothing. We got into groups according to our ages and learned lots of new 'everyday' phrases. We also learned to count all the way up to 39!! Mrs Ryan is helping us learn our hymn in Irish for our Christmas Performance. It was great having her in our class today!

All about Adjectives

We learned all about adjectives this week… how they are linked to nouns as they are describing words which add detail to writing by describing a person, place or thing. We explored how changing nouns alters the meaning of a sentence and experimented with thinking of creative adjectives of our own to make sentences even more interesting. We linked our adjective work to some art this week, creating words that look like the description they represent. We enjoyed creating the word ‘Hot’ and then having a go at some other words of our own choosing. They were fabulous and such fun!

WAU Fossil Art Work

In WAU we did some fossil art based on our work and research on dinosaurs and the role of archaeologists and palaeontologists in finding out about the pre-historic era. We created amazing dinosaur fossils and used this task to support our procedural writing.

Firstly, we had to pick the dinosaur for which we wanted to draw adn create the skeleton. Once we had drawn the skeleton, we used tissue paper and PVA glue to build up and make the bones to give it a 3D effect. Then once it was dry, we painted the bones and the surrounding sand/dirt to make it look like the fossil had been discovered. Some are still being completed but they are so effcetive so far!!

Irish

We had Rory in for our Irish teaching and had a great time putting our irish to use with games and activities outside. Then we played a game of 'guess who' and we had to learn to say the clues in Irish to help Rory guess what was on his head. It was great fun!! Thanks Rory

Well done to Aiyana and Oran who were awarded the 'Star of the week'... both pupils have worked really hard on presentation and attention to detail in home tasks! Well done!!

Maith Sibh Gach Duine!! smiley

In November we pray for our deceased

In Grow in Love, we reflected on November as the month for remembering and prayign for our loved ones who are now in their heavenly home. We created a special ‘Prayer chain’ for our Sacred Space and leaarned the prayer ‘Eternal Rest’.

Conjunctions

We focused on conjunctions this week, particularly where they are used to join two sentences together to make a compound sentence. We discovered that we already use conjunctions ALOT in our reading and writing. We put our knowledge to the test in a conjunctions blockbuster challenge game!

Irish

Well done to our Irish speakers of the day; Mary Kate and Ayda! This week we were learning how to say all the parts of the body in Irish. We also used our previous learning about colours to say what colour our eyes were. Such great work and great helpers too!!

On Friday we had lots of strange and wonderful visitors to our classroom... we couldn't recognise anyone!! We had lots of fun on our fancy dress day! Well done everyone!yes

Time Games

In Numeracy we continued our time focus… this time we were linking digital and analogue time. P4 were looiking at how quarter to times are represented on the digital clock. P5 were also connecting analgue and digital time but were extended to 5 minute intervals. They also focused on how we say the times… so we don’t say its 50 past 11… we say its ten to 12. Both groups had fun playing time games linked to the learning. P4 played ‘First to 5’ and P5 played ‘4 in a row’.

Irish

Well done to Oran, who was our ‘Gaeigleoir an Lae’ this week. All the boys and girls enjoyed learning some halloween vocabularly and phrases. Shape and Space... Tangrams

In Shape and space, we learned about Tangrams and how we can connect known 2D shapes to create other shapes and shape pictures. This was very practical… we had to follow instructions carefully to create given shapes, then had a go at making our own and given instructions for our classmates to create our tangrams.

NSPCC... Speak out and Stay Safe Assembly

Great teamwork and fun in the yard... lots of engineers in the making!!

How many days in the month?

Number Triangles

This week in Numeracy we were working on the link between adding and subtracting. We learned that these are ‘inverse’ operations which means they are linked. We worked on writing all the adding and subtracting calculations linked to a given calculation. We enjoyed creating number triangles to create these sums.

Happy Birthday to Annie!

Irish this week...

This week in Irish we were learning how to talk about the weather. We have been trying hard to use our Irish throughout the school week including blessing ourselves in Irish and greeting each other in the morning. Well done to Isla who was our ‘’Gaeilgeoir an Lae’ this week!

Recount writing... Newspaper Openings!

We extended our knowledge of recount texts, focusing on the Newspaper recount. We had great fun getting blindfolded to select the fictional who? where? when? and what? for our newspaper openings based on a stolen item. We did some shared writing on the board and created a catchy headline to go with the opening to our text. Then we worked in pairs to select a fictional who? what? where? when? and did some shared writing. We tried to add in some of our time connectives that we had learned last week too!

2D shape symmetry

In 2D shape we worked on symmetry this week, looking at the 2D shapes that have one or two lines of symmetry. We used a selection of 2D shapes to create our own symmetrical shape pictures… the creativity was amazing!!

Just2easy animation

In ICT this week we had great fun getting familiar with animation using Just2easy animate. We selected the ‘Halloween’ theme and learned how to make a stop-start animation, making our characters move and have a conversation using speech bubbles. We loved viewing each other’s animations together on the whiteboard. you can preview some of our animations using the QR codes in the document below!! I think you'll agree they are very impressive yes

Well done to Annie- this week's Gaigleoir an lae smiley

We are working on our self-management skills and completed a KWL for literacy on what we know about Recount texts, followed by the 3 key things we discovered that day!

Our Thinking skills and personal capabilities (TSPC) skill we are focusing on this half term is 'self-management' Today we completed a STEM challenge where we had to think of how best to build a tower, trying methods and evaluating what we have done to make it better. The only 3 instructions were; it had to be as tall as possible, the tower could only be made from straws, tape and paper AND it had to stand on its own!! It was tricky but FUN!!!

Week 1 Mathletics winners!!

Welldone to our first bronze certificate winners of the new year!!
