P5 Mrs Woods/Miss Collins

Welcome to Primary 5

Check out our page each week to see the wonderful learning that is happening in our class!

Class Teacher: Mrs Woods (Miss Collins - Wednesday)

Baby Chicks 🐤

Lisa took 4 of her baby chicks into school during the week and brought them around all the classes so we could have a look.  They were so tiny and so cute.  Some of us got to hold them but we had to be very careful with them.

Fitness Freddie

We had great fun with Fitness Freddie.  He was ‘awesome’.  We were exhausted by the end of the session 😀

We had a surprise visit from the Easter bunny today. We had an egg hunt and when we all found our eggs, we were so happy. Thank you so much Easter Bunny!! Lots of happy children 😁😄

We had a visit from our local PSNI officers to listen to advice about online safety. They helped us understand how to use online platforms safely and they advised us that they can be dangerous places as well. They talked to us about online bullying and we were very surprised to learn that everything we write down is always out there for someone to see. We have to be very careful what information we make available online and what words we use to other people. We also listened as the officers shared their daily routine with us and we joined in a very informative question and answer session.

As part of our WAU topic on Food, and our interest in Healthy Eating, we have been learning the names of fruits in French The children are enjoying singing our French songs and are using little French phrases 👨‍🎨.

This week we have been working on Fractions. We used counters to help us understand how to find halves and quarters of numbers. We linked our learning with Division and learned how to record fractions correctly.

We have been working really hard all week on our story writing. We were focusing on the legend of Finn McCool and how he built the Giant’s Causeway. We heard about how he had to do battle with the Scottish giant Bennandonner and how his wife Oonagh came up with a cunning plan. great work from all the children 😀

Happy Mother’s Day to all 😀

We had a wonderful day today down on Cranfield beach, helping to take care of our beautiful environment by taking part in the beach clean. We founds so much rubbish on the beach and we are all really proud of our hard work today 😀

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

We had a great day today showcasing our talents at the school presentation. We had tin whistles, violins, poems, songs, Irish dancing and jokes. It was lovely to see how confident all the children were in front of the all the staff and other children. What a talented bunch 😀

On Monday we were so lucky to get a Fire Safety Talk from the Fire Department. The children were given jobs to do at home- check the fire alarms, check the fire safety escape plan and discuss what they learned in class today 🙂

We had a lovely time on Friday when we dressed up to celebrate World Book Day. The children all looked amazing. Thank you to all the parents for putting so much effort into the costumes.

We also participated in a variety of reading activities to help raise money for a very important charity, helping sick children.

What a brilliant time we had at the STEM technology challenge 😀. We learned how to use code to program the MBots. We learned how to move them and turn and slow down their movement. We used a road map to move them along the road and around the corners. Some even tried to park their robot in a parking bay. What a great day of learning through fun activities 😃

Having a brilliant time on the new Touch Screen Interactive Whiteboard. Thank you so much to our wonderful parents 😀

Having fun creating portraits of each other 😉

We had great fun working on Handling Data this week. We worked as a class, and in small groups to answer a range of questions about a given graph. The children were given the choice of solving the problems in whatever way they wished and were very happy to share their solutions with the rest of the class.

This week we have been working on the r/rr sound for phonics. We watched some videos of all the different variations of the target sound and had a go at spelling.

We also began work on our new Comprehension strategy for this half term – Inference and clarifying. We worked through a power point and tried to identify the character’s feelings by looking for clues in the pictures and texts. We had to provide links to the evidence in the text. Some great discussions and ideas were put forward by the children. We also worked on BBC Bitesize activities and had great fun trying to infer what the main character (Tiddalik the frog) was like. The children drew Tiddalik and wrote their ideas inside his body. Then we shared all our views with the rest of the class.

Happy Valentine’s Day 🥰❤️

We have been studying Alexander Graham Bell for our WAU topic on Famous People and today we decided to try to create our own telephones in pairs. Here they are working away together. I hope they work 🤞 😉

Success 🥳. They actually work 😃

This wee is Children’s Mental Health Week. We have been working on how to look after our mental health by being able to express and share our feelings and doing things we enjoy 😊

Today is Internet Safety Day. We had great discussions in class about our online experiences, both positive and negative. We talked about how to improve our safety when working online and using online platforms. We decided to create posters to help each other be more aware of the dangers that some of us may face.

Happy Grandparents Day to all our Grandparents. Thank you for everything you do for us 👵🏻🧔🏼

Here we are working hard on our Focus area for Problem Solving- Finding All Possibilities

Boldly going where no man has gone before......

Here we are researching our topic with the focus on Neil Armstrong and the 1969 moon landing.

Neil Armstrong and Ground Control question and answer session.

This week, we are spending time becoming familiar with Explanation Texts. We have been looking at the rules needed to create a good text and have been working together in groups to produce group texts to present to the class. This gives us great opportunities to use and improve our oral language skills.

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to a new school year. We had great fun this week making penguins for our Winter display. We used Augmented Reality to Bring some 3D penguins into the classroom with us for photographs 😉

Our 3D shape cone angels 👼 and our symmetrical snowflakes ❄️

Anti Bullying Week

We started of the week on Monday with ‘Odd socks Day’ to mark Anti Bullying week.  Our odd socks signify that we are all different and unique and we should celebrate that difference.

This years theme was ‘One Kind word’.  We discussed how kindness is everywhere and ways in which we can show kindness.  We created a kindness tree for display in our classroom.

On Friday 5th November we took part in woolly hat day to help raise funds for Mourne Stimulus.

Today we are using our measuring skills outside. We are working in teams to measure areas of the yard. We will estimate first and then compare our estimation with the actual result.

We are all working hard in our Reciprocal reading groups. We all have an important part to play to help us understand the text. Lots of great discussions going on 😊

Happy Halloween everyone  👻 🎃

We enjoyed exploring tessellation through practical activities.  We recognised shapes that could tessellate and ensured there were no gaps or overlapping.  We also looked at images from around the world that demonstrated tessellation.

Today we are working hard on our Visualisation task. We are using comprehension strategies to understand the text better and locate specific parts of information. We need to try to picture what is happening in our minds.

Today we were learning how to use the future tense of verbs by playing a game with our partner. We had to answer the questions about the future.

For PDMU we discussed all the different ways we are ‘smart’. We can be book smart, nature smart, art smart, music smart, logic smart etc.

For PDMU we created acrostic poems using positive adjectives for each of the letters of our name 🙂

Our Class Code- created and agreed by our class 🙂

Have a look at our beautiful self portraits 🙂
